General David Stuart Gordon papers, 1892-1925.

Papers include a letter from Gen. Gordon to Charles C. Wallcutt, Jr., Army Recorder, turning down the position of Commander of the Order of Indian Wars and suggesting that a younger person would be more appropriate (1892); various newspaper clippings, including one on Gordon's role in Gen. James Lane's Frontier Guard (1906); letters to Gordon with remembrances of and requests for information about the Lane Guards and Indian Wars (1907 [typewritten copy] and 1919); letters from Bell Fleming to Gen. Gordon at The Brighton (1912); and an Army War College-produced Catalogue of American Indian War Photographs, which has names and tribes of those pictured, dates, locations, and some brief biographical and historical notes (48 p.). Also included is a London Patent Office patent application letter for a claim of international rights to "Improvements in combined match-cases and cigar-tip cutters" (1909).

He was active in his home state of Indiana, serving as a military commander in the Mexican War (1841) and later as Indiana's Lieutenant Governor from 1849-1853.
